INNER WORLDS
SIGMUND FREUD AND ART
28 October 2023 — 3 March 2024

Herbert Bayer, Hans Bellmer, Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, Victor Brauner, Barbara Breitenfellner, Günter Brus, Heidi Bucher, Gregory Crewdson, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Delvaux, Maya Deren, Max Ernst, Richard Gerstl, Alberto Giacometti, Walter Gramatté, Julie Hayward, Birgit Jürgenssen, William Kentridge, Käthe Kollwitz, Oskar Kokoschka, Juro Kubicek, Rachel Lachowicz, Robert Longo, René Magritte, André Masson, Hermann Nitsch, Richard Oelze, Hans Op de Beeck, Meret Oppenheim, Man Ray, Arnulf Rainer, Markus Schinwald, Nadja Schöllhammer, Esther Shalev-Gerz, Sammlung Helmut Klewan, Cindy Sherman, Hermann Struck, Raoul Ubac, Umbo, Raphaela Vogel, Kay Walkowiak, Jeff Wall, Franz West, Francesca Woodman, Thomas Zipp, Heimo Zobernig

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, revolutionized the concept of man at the beginning of the last century. His exploration of the “unconscious” became the driving force behind the European avant-garde of his time, and he shaped the culture of the 20th century like no other. For example, his idea that the way human beings feel, think and act was greatly influenced by the unconscious helped to generate the pan-European art movement Surrealism early in the last century.

Among Expressionists, his psychology unleashed a search for the self. In the immediate post-war period, and inspired by Freud, artists of Informalism and Abstract Expressionism both in Europe and America tried to render the creative forces of the unconscious in the material form of painting. The exhibition will be developed in cooperation with the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna and will trace the reception of Freud’s theories in art from the 20th century to today: from creative processes striving to ‘materialize’ inner worlds at the start of the last century, to the existentialist approaches of the post-war period, to Concept Art in the 1980s and feminist stances in post-modernism, all of which reflect, sometimes critically, the heritage of the master of psychoanalysis in the language of art.

NOT MY CIRCUS, NOT MY MONKEYS.
THE CIRCUS MOTIF IN CONTEMPORARY ART
16 September — 3 December 2023

Kathryn Andrews, Miriam Bäckström, Istvan Balogh, Beni Bischof, Barbara Breitenfellner, Mona Boschàr, Michael Dannenmann, Latifa Echakhch, Nicola Hicks, Zilla Leutenegger, Taus Makhacheva, Dieter Meier, Yves Netzhammer, Tal R, Augustin Rebetez & Martin Zimmermann, Boris Rebetez, Ugo Rondinone, Niklaus Rüegg, Francisco Sierra, Norbert Tadeusz, William Wegmann

The first circus was founded in London towards the end of the eighteenth century, and over the following century this form of entertainment would go on to become a mass phenomenon in European urban life, exerting a lasting fascination. Today, the circus as a locus of sensual experiences and sensational extremes seems like a relic of a bygone era. But its symbolic power remains undiminished. For its inquisitive exploration of the enduring nature of humanity, and its deliberate staging of beautiful illusions alongside hard struggles, of success and failure as integral parts of human existence, can in fact tell us a great deal about today’s reality. The thematic exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Thun assembles works by contemporary artists who draw on circus motifs. In evoking its formal vocabulary and emotionality, they demonstrate how the circus with its unique repertoire offers a model for questioning our own present-day social conditions, a way to lay bare cultural power structures and marginalization as well as political and historical filters.

GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY
Towards a Feminist Criminology

November 12, 2022 - February 19, 2023

The exhibition undertakes a feminist assessment of jurisdictional power. The focus is on “women on trial”—female artists, “bad mothers,” women defendants and women plaintiffs on a rather lost cause. In this context, the courtroom does not only appear as a site of legal assessment, but primarily as a space in which a political or ideological image of women is always implicitly negotiated and constructed. What else, beyond the juridical paragraphs, is debated here? And how can we render this hidden discourse visible?

With Dennis Adams, Rüzgâr Buşki, Barbara Breitenfellner, İpek Duben, Nika Dubrovsky, Galit Eilat, Noa Gur, Dominique Hurth, KwieKulik, Suzana Milevska with Sam Richardson, Krystal Shelley & Shevaun Wright, Roee Rosen, Susanne Sachsse, Ekaterina Shelganova, curated by Sonja Lau

DISTURBANCE: WITCH
curated by Olga Vostretsova and Alba D'Urbano
September 11, 2020 - May 2, 2021

The feminist movement of the 1970s had already made the connection between witches and emancipated women, and the witch became a feminist archetype. The witch, the ‘abnormal’, the ‘irrational’, the ‘magical’ and the ‘inverse’ resists rigid role models and structures. Unfolded in the exhibition are the aspects of the witch’s character. disturbance: witch does not address the practices of the historical witch nor the practice of magic, rather it analyzes attributions to women and queer persons.

THE AGE OF COLLAGE by GESTALTEN VERLAG

Cut, paste, create: while collage was conceived in the early 1900's, it seems to be the perfect form of expression for the 21st-century, with all its juxtapositions, eclecticism, and strange bedfellows. In our present age of collage, the simple act of mixing together different elements allows us to question our reality and make new worlds. The Age of Collage showcases a new crop of artistic vanguards advancing the medium’s possibilities, piece-by-piece. Equipped with a craft knife, paintbrush, stylus, scissors, or tablet, a collage artist’s toolkit is as varied as their creations and this book brings their work back to the paper page. From the poignant and provocative to the comic and curious, The Age of Collage features the creations of more than 60 artists. Packed with visuals and a number of in-depth profiles revealing what drives the hands behind the pieces, this comprehensive volume is a celebration of the enduring power of collage.

The Age of Collage features work by Matt Borusso, Barbara Breitenfellner, Katrien De Blauwer, Andrei Cojocaru, Amie Dicke, Aikaterini Gegisian, Weronika Gęsicka, Eva Koťátková, Midori, Max-o-matic, Isabel Reitemeyer, Collier Schorr, Charles Wilkin, and many others.

I'VE NEVER SEEN THE SKY LIKE THIS BEFORE
curated by Bronia Iwańczak
September 12 - November 8, 2020

„This show is an organic curation, 'like attracts like' and all the artists and writers involved are thinkers: different angles, different hues. My motivation was to create a record, 'to clot the flow' of a moment in time which feels like a strange global ‘Covid induced dream' – (while we were sleeping...) – we were being restructured in our consciousness, partly to the last throes of an opportunistic capitalism and partly to the new understanding of a progressive aspiration of a radical interdependence, with all the empathy, generosity, vulnerability and the terrible debt that we owe each other in a stormy sea.“ (Bronia Iwańczak)

JUST OUT !
FAKE TERRITORIES - Barbara Breitenfellner
English / German. Hard cover, Full colour, 184 pages
Design: Büro Otto Sauhaus, Verbrecher Verlag, 2016

For the last seventeen years, Barbara Breitenfellner has been jotting down art-related dreams. Her installations are constructions of these nightly recordings. The descriptions of the dreams function often as both work instructions and work titles. In the continuation of other artists and writers dealing with dream recollections (William S. Burroughs, Heinar Kipphardt, Jim Shaw, Unica Zürn, and many others), she uses her protocols to create condensed and distorted, often absurd or ironic representations of making and exhibiting art and being an artist.

RORY MACLEAN MEETS BARBARA BREITENFELLNER

Barbara Breitenfellner opens the door to a parallel world. She imagines spaces unknown to us yet forever sensed. She portrays places that we stretch out to grasp, only to discover that they will remain forever beyond our reach. That is the paradox at the heart of her remarkable work. Through the irrational logic of dreams, Breitenfellner offers us a glimpse of the places where imagination and reality meet ...

FIXATION - Bats, babes, and discoballs in the works of Barbara Breitenfellner

The workspace of Austrian-born Berliner, collagist and installation artist Barbara Breitenfellner is host to an elaborate rigging of books, boxes and trays that more closely resembles a chemistry lab than a cutting table. A long worktable lines one blue wall of her home-studio, whereon clippings brew in piles, paper churns in various stages of doing and undoing, and cans of spray glue await their day. Wallabies and bombshells rotate in and out of circulation, off the shelf, out of the book, off the page, into the hash, out of the hash, then either onto the page, into the frame and back onto the wall, or into a box for another chance at reincarnation. I spoke with Breitenfellner during my visit to Kreuzberg ... read more ...
